Nursing ideals and analytical philosophy rarely overlap. As a result, existing nursing codes fail to define key terms clearly enough to enable nurses to apply them. David Seedhouse tackles this problem by looking at nine key concept, explains their meaning and shows how they can be applied in everyday situations. The result is a precise yet compassionate framework which enables nurses to reflect deeply about the importance of their work, and can suipport them as they strive to make ethically sound decisions. aeo Provides a practical approach to traditionally intangible health care issues aeo Includes an array of accessible case studies and diagrams aeo Offers sensible strategies for nurses to implement philisophical insights in their daily care Any nurse, or other health care worker, who has wondered how best to apply key words such as a carea , a dignitya and a ethicsa in everyday situations will find this practical and informed clarification indispensible. This book provides the definitive Code of Nursing Practice, clarifying the nine words that are central to nursing -- advocacy, care, dignity, holism, separatism, research, ethics, health, and nursing itself. Each keyword is clearly defined and comprehensively illustrated with down--to--earth nursing/health care examples.

This volume focuses on issues that will have a fundamentally pivotal character as we move into the new millennium, and its individual contributions all have a decidedly futuristic approach, i.e., they identify the nature of the choices or dilemmas these issues will present to us in the future, and the various resolutions that might be made regarding them. The three main topic areas in this volume are: (1) the dilemma of funding health care (H. Tristram Engelhardt, Jr., Lawrence McCullough, and E. Haavi Morreim); (2) the human genome project (Eric Juengst, Jonathan Moreno, Dorothy Nelkin, and Diane Paul, and (3) the physician/patient relationship (Scott Devito, Kathryn Montgomery, Julie Rothstein, and Howard Brody). This edition thus focuses on (1) the most fundamental unit of care, i.e., the physician/patient relationship, (2) what may well be the area of medical science and research that most radically affects the nature of that care in the foreseeable future, i.e., the human genome project, and (3) the societal options for financing and distributing that care, i.e., the dilemma of funding health care.
